How Our Groundhog Removal Process Works

No mystery, no vague promises. Here's exactly what happens from your first phone call to a groundhog-free, protected property — typically within a week.

Day 1

Free Quote & Property Assessment

It starts with a phone call — describe what you're seeing and we can often quote straight over the phone. For complex properties (farms, hillsides, commercial grounds), we do a free on-site walk-through instead. Either way, we identify every active burrow entrance, estimate how many animals are involved, and give you a written, no-obligation price before any work begins.

  • Phone quotes for most residential jobs
  • Free on-site walk-throughs for complex properties
  • Every active burrow entrance located and flagged
  • Written estimate — no surprises, no obligation

Humane Trapping

We set professional live traps directly on the travel paths groundhogs already use — placement is the difference between catching an animal in two days versus two weeks. Traps are checked daily as required by Kentucky and Indiana law, and every captured groundhog is handled calmly and relocated in full compliance with state wildlife regulations. If there are young in the burrow, we adjust timing and methods so the family stays together.

  • Traps placed at active burrow entrances and travel lanes
  • Daily trap checks per KY and IN regulations
  • Legal relocation to suitable habitat
  • Family-aware timing when young are present

Burrow Filling & Property Repair

Once we confirm the burrow system is vacant, we probe and map its full extent — main tunnels commonly run 20-30 feet with multiple entrances — then fill it with compacted backfill in lifts. A burrow that's just topped off at the entrance will collapse into a trip-hazard depression or get reopened within weeks. We also repair lawn damage, restore garden beds, and document any structural undermining for your records.

  • Full tunnel system probed and mapped before filling
  • Compacted backfill in lifts — no future sinkholes
  • Lawn and garden restoration included
  • Structural damage documented for contractors/insurance

Exclusion & Prevention

The final step is making sure this doesn't happen again. We install buried galvanized mesh barriers around the structures groundhogs target — decks, porches, sheds, crawl spaces — and walk you through the habitat factors on your property that attracted the animal. For properties near parks, creeks, or farmland with constant groundhog pressure, we'll recommend a maintenance plan; for most homes, one-time exclusion is enough.

  • Buried mesh barriers around decks, sheds, and porches
  • Habitat and attractant walk-through with every job
  • Garden fencing designed for diggers and climbers
  • Optional maintenance plans for high-pressure properties

How Long Does the Whole Process Take?

A typical single-groundhog residential job runs 3-7 days from first trap set to filled burrow, plus a day for exclusion work. Multi-animal situations, farms, and large commercial properties take longer — and we'll tell you that honestly at the quote stage, not after you've signed.

Emergency situations — a groundhog inside a structure, a burrow threatening a foundation or retaining wall — get same-day or next-day response.
